It's nonsense to appease China over Taiwan pins
Barbara Yaffe, Vancouver Sun
Published: Thursday, December 06, 2007
Move over, Kermit; it's not just tough being green. It's tough being Taiwan.
Taiwanese officials in Canada were surprised this week to read in The Vancouver Sun that city officials are in a dither over some 2010 Olympic items manufactured on the island nation.
The promotional pins -- advertising Vancouver as "host city" for the 2010 Games -- were produced by official Vanoc pin maker Artiss Aminco Ltd.
Part of an Artiss Aminco order that was supposed to derive from China in fact originated from a Taiwanese plant. So what, right?
Turns out, the pins were targeted for distribution in China by an official Canadian delegation attending Beijing's 2008 Olympic Games.
The supposition is that residents of Beijing would be aghast at seeing pins with a "made in Taiwan" imprimatur. How can pins be made by a plant located in Taiwan when Taiwan doesn't even exist as a country?
The People's Republic of China espouses the notion that Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, is naught but a breakaway province, a renegade snippet of land that ultimately must be brought to heel under Beijing's rule.
And now, Canada is expected to play along with the fantasy for fear of antagonizing the Communist regime and its citizens.
Vancouver's chief of protocol Sven Buemann was quoted Tuesday: "It's not a large issue, but it is one we are sensitive to."
What nonsense. Canada is not China's lapdog. This country should be free to recognize and acknowledge the reality that Taiwan, in every conceivable respect, functions as a separate, sovereign, independent country 8) . And it is capable of producing pins.
China, for its own political reasons, clings to the lie that Taiwan is part of China, and it indoctrinates its citizens accordingly. But Canadians aren't required to buy into this foolishness.
This country's companies are free to contract with businesspeople in any country they choose.
Legitimate concern could arise if, say, suppliers for an Olympic Games were companies working under repressive regimes such as Zimbabwe or Venezuela. But Taiwan? Taiwan is an internationally generous, law-abiding, freedom-loving, democratic nation.
Not surprisingly, the Taiwanese are more than a little miffed by this controversy.
"While Taiwan is willing to play by international rules, it continues to find its sovereignty thwarted," Brian Su, a Taiwanese representative in Vancouver, wrote this week.
"Most people who make decisions, like the recent one by Vancouver city hall, do not realize that the People's Republic of China has never held jurisdiction over Taiwan.
"Still, most countries buy into the lie that the [People's Republic of China] owns the island. They do it because money talks." In other words, countries want to protect their trade relationship with the Asian giant.
And here's another surprise for Vancouver city officials.
China itself functions in a way that recognizes Taiwan's status; the Chinese do an incredible volume of trade with the country they don't believe is a country.
Yes, it seems, when it comes to making money, there are limits to China's fantasies about Taiwan: total trade between Taiwan and China from January to September of this year totalled $64.4 billion, reflecting nearly 20 per cent of Taiwan's total trade. Taiwanese investment in China last year totalled $7.6 billion.

Yet the Chinese do not appear to be offended by this state of affairs.
Su asserts further that Canada's decision to sideline the Taiwan pins and replace them with pins from China is "nothing short of pandering to a bully. Canadians are supposed to stand up to bullies."
Vancouver officials might want to rethink their unnecessary mea culpa over the Taiwanese pins.
Last year, this country exported $1.2 billion worth of goods to Taiwan, an increase of nearly 10 per cent over 2005. It imported $3.4 billion from Taiwan, an increase of six per cent over the previous year.
Or should we be hiding these numbers for fear of antagonizing the Chinese?
If Canada tries to appease every last nation it will be hosting during the 2010 Olympics, it might as well forget about the competition at the sporting venues. The real contests will be entirely political.
Canada would be wise to stick a pin in all this right now.
